Skylights: Things to Keep in Mind Before Installation

Every home needs proper illumination, and windows are an effective way to increase natural light indoors. However, there are cases wherein standard windows don’t fit certain spaces, and this is where skylights can help.

What Are Skylights?

A skylight, also known as a roof light, is a type of window made with transparent or translucent glass that occupies all or part of a building’s roof area for natural illumination. However, don’t get confused between a skylight and a roof window. While both are types of windows, a skylight’s function is primarily to provide light. Most types of skylights are basically fixed windows that can’t be operated, but some – called vented skylights – can provide limited ventilation as well. Meanwhile, a roof window can be opened and closed to control ventilation and light.

Not All Roofs Work With Skylights

Some roofs aren’t ideal for the installation of skylights. Generally, a roof needs to be able to support the space and load requirements of a skylight. Stick-framed roofs, for example, are fine for skylights since they can be cut, and they’re built with individually spaced rafters. This frame allows enough space to accommodate and support skylights. Truss-framed roofs, however, aren’t meant to be cut after they are installed, so installing skylights on them can be risky for your roof’s structural integrity. To be completely sure, have your trusted roofing company inspect your roof and ask whether it can support a skylight or not.

Don’t Install Skylights by Yourself

Some homeowners may think of installing skylights themselves in the hopes of saving money. However, doing so will put your entire roofing system at risk. Leaks are the most probable result of a DIY skylight installation. It’s common for DIYers to simply cut into a roof and place a fixed window with no regard to the roof itself. Remember that there is more to skylights than just cutting and installing a frame and a glass pane. Weight distribution, exposure to outdoor elements, insulation and orientation are just some of the many factors to consider when installing skylights. For the best results, leave the whole process to professionals.
