Are You Experiencing
Problems With Ice Damming?
Ganser Has The Answers!
What Is An Ice Dam?
An ice dam is a ridge of ice that typically forms at the lower
edge of the roof allowing water to pool behind it. Untreated
water leakage from behind an ice dam can penetrate through
into the home which can cause rotting wood, mold build-up,
wires shorting out, floors warping, and paint damage.
What Causes Ice Dams?
There are two causes of ice dams. The first occurs when warm air from the attic melts the snow on the upper roof
which then flows down to the cold overhangs. The ice dam begins to build in the gutters and continues up the roof,
forming a ridge of ice that traps water behind it. Poor attic insulation and ventilation work hand in hand to make the
leakage worse.
The second scenario is a rapid freeze/thaw cycle. Freezing
temperatures with spotty sunshine can melt snowwhich refreezes
when the sun goes down or hides behind some clouds. Ice dams
can form over the entire roof, not just over the overhangs: the
quicker the freeze/thaw cycle, the worse the potential of leaks.
What can you do?
If you 're not an alpine hiker, do not walk on your slippery roof.
You could cause damage to yourself, not to mention the ER bill!
Also, you damage your roof further and void any warranties. Call
a professional to safely remove the ice dam.
Talk to a professional to assess your attic's insulation and
ventilation as well as your roof and gutters. Proactive steps
should be taken to prevent future issues.
Do not procrastinate! The water and ice buildup could be
leaking into your walls. Waiting could cause further damage.
