There are some things you probably don’t already know replacing your windows. People don’t spend hours browsing the web for information about windows until they need to have their old ones repaired or new ones installed.

What You Need to Know About Window Replacement

There are many window choices out there, and, if you want the best quality, you’ll have to pay a premium. Here’s a guide to help you get started.

Number of Windows

It’s important to note that installing only one or two new windows might cost you more, especially if you change your mind later and wish to install more windows. Before calling window contractors, it’s best to decide on the number of windows you wish to replace. If you’re doing a partial installation, do it by panel to avoid having windows that are obviously mismatched.

Style

Most homeowners would stick to their original style of windows. However, you should know that, sometimes, the manufacturer would make a few changes so your old windows might be out of date, style-wise. Unless you’ve proven and decided that the style of your windows is the best option for the style of your home, you can choose a different style for your window replacement.

Common styles include double-hung, tilt-out, casement, picture, bow and bay windows. There are many more options. Talk to a window contractor before deciding. It’s also advisable to test out the windows at the contractor’s showroom.

Energy Efficiency

Energy efficiency capabilities also vary among window choices. Some offer double-pane glass with an inert gas injected between the panes. This style increases the window’s energy efficiency and provides a good barrier against outdoor temperatures and even noise. Experts agree that a good double-pane glass window is all you need, so a triple-pane window might just be a more expensive option with little or no additional benefits over double-pane counterparts.

Windows that are equipped with high-performance Low-E glass are pricier, but they also offer some of the best energy efficiency and indoor comfort you can find on the market.

Frame Material

Frame materials vary in their appearance, longevity and maintenance requirements. Vinyl, fiberglass, aluminum, composite and wood are all popular choices. Aluminum might be less expensive, but it’s less energy-efficient and more thermally conductive than other options like Ultrex® fiberglass. Make sure to do your research on the material you want for your window frames.

Warranty

Finally, check the warranty for your choice of windows. The best windows are often backed by the strongest manufacturer warranties. And, the best window installers also back their workmanship with their own warranties. Those are the kinds of warranties you want: one from your window technician plus one from the product manufacturer. Avoid contractor-warranty-only deals.
